diy dressing up: mr gum

After complaining about how often my kiddos have to dress up for school, it seems that months have gone by without any calls for last minute crafty mummy to come to the rescue, so last week's World Book Day found me a little rusty. As usual, despite the 3 week warning we had from school, the numerous reminder letters, and even the discussions around who or what to be, we still left organising the outfit until the night before.

I'm afraid that I'm a sucker for a homemade outfit, they look so much cuter, and let's face it teachers must look favourably on the obvious effort involved! It's OK though, I have a tried and tested system now for school dress up days - make one thing, this gives the impression of being homemade without too much stress, and it never fails to impress - bingo! So after deciding on what/who to be, we hunt around the house to put together the basics. Then to add that little bit of pizzazz, crafty mummy steps in.

This time Freddie wanted to be Mr Gum, I was surprised, he normally goes for low key, but he insisted. Oversized jacket (my little vintage Italian number - yes I was worried about it all day!), green top, too-short trousers, all easy to find. The crafty problem was all about the head gear. But a quick trip to my local haberdashery/craft store proved to be the answer to my prayers - orange bobbly wool, card and black paint ... the result, not perfect, but not bad under time pressure ... and I love the way he got into character!

Did anyone else do anything fun for World Book Day ... the cutest thing I saw (apart from my boy, of course) were these utterly gorgeous biscuits ...

  1. You are one clever mama, I love Mr. Gum and his incredible pompoms! Brilliant idea Emma and Freddie is well into character, bless, its so lovely to see x Not a year went by in junior school when Alice had to be dressed up in character, she always humoured me with my desire for home diy costumes and we came up with some really inventive ideas. Sadly when she went in as Alice in Wonderland in year 6 her peers were old enough to make note of the shabby chic non-bought costume BUT her divine teacher totally acknowledged her for my homemade effort and i think she got some kind of star prize thingy! Yay for clever adults, kids can be so cruel at times. I miss the dressing up, it all seems to change in high school. Keep cosy and cuddled in these hideous snowy winds xox Penelope

    1. Isn't it funny how senior school is such a big step for parents as well as kids! I am getting myself all tied up in knots about it already, which school to choose, is Freddie ready, how will he cope with the workload!!! And what I hadn't realised is that there is almost a period of mourning for parents, it's such an obvious landmark that your little kiddo is growing up, that they don't need you in the same way, that you don't know everything about them anymore ... exciting, tinged with sadness ... sometimes I whinge about all the dressing up and required help, but secretly I relish it, and a big hole will be left once all the kiddos are in senior school ... fortunately I have a long while to wait and my littlest is still at home - I really might be ready to move on by then!!

  2. It's defintiely way better when the children wear home-made imaginative outfits, but I've always reminded myself not to think badly of the (majority) ones who haven't - it's the parents who haven't got the time/inclination to make them.
